WILLIAM ANGLE WILLIAM ANGLE is author of "The Package", "Circles", "Golden Years", and various other science fiction and speculative fiction stories. His most popular work is "The Package And Other Stories", available from The FreeLook BookStore. That site also occasionally features free stories by WILLIAM ANGLE in its monthly E-Zine.
...And His Stories The stories of WILLIAM ANGLE are humorous, dark, and have many twists. Some of these twists are obvious, but Angle is also a deep writer that leaves the reader wondering about possibilities and intent. Angle himself appears rather mysterious and inaccessible. His stories often deal with questions about quantum theory, archaeology, anthropology, astronomy, and occasionally medicine. All of his stories appear well founded in scientific fact and theory. Introduction To WILLIAM ANGLE
I was first introduced to the writings of WILLIAM ANGLE around 1978, when I read a short excerpt from a book called "Random Boxes" that was published in my college paper. It consisted of the first several short chapters from that book. The story dealt the idea of first alien contact with the planet earth. In "Random Boxes", aliens invite Earth into the galactic community -- contingent on earth passing a rather simple test. If they pass this test, Earth is welcome as a full partner of the galaxy. If Earth fails the test, then the planet is deemed "unworthy" and is to be destroyed. The "simple" test that earth must pass is that a human being will be chosen at random from the general population, and that human must without stopping or resting -- RUN FOR FIVE SOLID YEARS. This outrageous premise is treated with dead-pan seriousness by Angle in a totally believable way. Of course, Earth realizes that such a test is impossible to pass, and that the motives of the aliens are completely inscrutable. The excerpt ends with the leaders of Earth (faced with no real alternatives) deciding to accept the contest. The Search For WILLIAM ANGLE I found the whole concept and presentation of "Random Boxes" to be great, and went looking for a copy of this book -- to no avail. As far as I can tell, the book "Random Boxes" was never published. I searched the book catalogs rather diligently, including the US Copyright office, but could not find any information whatsoever on either "Random Boxes" or William Angle.
I've contacted the "FreeLook BookStore" publisher asking for William Angle's E-Mail address so I could ask how to get a copy of "Random Boxes." Apparently, the FreeLook BookStore is obliged to keep William Angle's e-mail address confidential. They have forwarded my letter to him, and I am hopeful about getting more info on his other works in the near future.
I suspect that William Angle is either a pen-name for a better known writer, or William Angle is not really that interested in popularizing his work. In any case, I have put together this website as a tribute to William Angle in the hopes he will reply to my fan-mail expeditiously. Hey -- given that I've put together this website (thereby proving myself to be his greatest fan), how could he do otherwise? See Also: "The Package" Concordance |
